Hip-hop and jazz were two very distinct genres that hardly ever mixed when this album was first released. While jazz was distinguished by its improvisational style, intricate harmonies, and use of conventional instruments like saxophones, trumpets, and pianos, hip-hop was recognized for its extensive use of samples, breakbeats, and basslines.
