A chuckle at and joking with the Panthers is the appropriate response following their lengthy flirtation with Baker Mayfield finally resulted in  Madden 23 Coins the trade. Carolina's lack of a plan for their QB job seemed to be wrapped more around saving their egos rather than seeking to sustain results, initially attempting to trade Deshaun Watson for a deal after which they were linked to any available QB in the market, before finally signing Matt Corral.

Before we look at how this deal might work, let it be known that I still don't like it, for all the same reasons I had in May. I don't see any upside to trading for Mayfield even if you're part of the Panthers. They're probably the worst team of the NFC South and Baker surely isn't going to help Carolina to be able to beat the Buccaneers for the division crown and the NFC has become such a death row, specifically within the NFC West and West that it's difficult to envision that a wildcard is on the horizon. If somehow this is the key ingredient to bring everything together, what the team will gain is having to pay Baker the biggest contract possible for him to stay based on an insignificant sample size or lose him for nothing.

What it does, however, is at least make the Panthers look interesting in 2022 when we take the assumption they were never going to be able to get started in Corral in his debut season. They may be talking about "open competition" at the moment however, when the main obstacle is a subpar Sam Darnold that has already proved that he isn't "the guy," any pretense of that there is an actual QB contest is just for posterity's sake.
